Finding yourself bored, dozing off as you watch TV late into the night ... or even during the day? Do you sometimes find yourself wishing you had a little bundle of love to cuddle with? Cavalier King Charles Spaniels just might be what you need. Cuddling in your lap whenever you sit down, a Cavalier is a calm and empathetic companion who will love you no matter what your mood, and a joyful, playful bundle of fun if you are in a mood to play. Do you have little ones around, kids or kittens? Cavaliers are THE dog breed with the least amount of wolf traits of all canine breeds! They will never bite ... it is simply not in their DNA to do so. Some people have had unhappy experiences with overly playful, larger dogs, who unintentionally hurt or scare their little ones (my husband Gary's own parents had to rehome a Cocker Spaniel that was too rough with their little four year old boy, even though he wanted a dog). That will never happen with Cavaliers, which as a toy breed, normally weigh between 13 to 18 pounds, and should never be allowed to weigh over 20 pounds. So, small, loving, playful and empathetic ... you can't do better than a Cavalier if you want a dog in your life ... and who doesn't want a cute, cuddly dog as a companion? So now, on to our story:
Our first Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was CH BroadBay Tuxedo Junction, call name Morgan (pictured here). We earned his AKC Championship at 23 months of age. Our love for Morgan for his temperament and beauty, and wanting one of his puppies, led us to breed him to his girlfriend Autumn when he was 6 years old. He is father and grandfather to three generations of Cavaliers, and his line continues under our kennel name, BayKings Cavaliers. Our first litter consisted of four females, whelped on Memorial Day of 2013, and named after Louisa May Alcott's book, "Little Women" (Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth March). Meg and Jo (we called her Josie) remained with us, and Amy and Beth went together to a home in Newport News.
Meg produced one litter, a Blenheim female named Charming Libra (Libby) who we kept, and two males, Castor and Pollux, a Blenheim and a Ruby (these Gemini twins were obviously fraternal, not identical). Meg was subsequently rehomed to the family of a lovely teenager who needed a cuddler to help her deal with a serious medical condition. Josie has had four litters sired by an exceptional Blenheim (who also sired Meg's litter). Together, Josie and Rumor produced 22 beautiful pups (see BayKings photo pages under the menu). Josie is now retired, and Meg's Libby has given us two litters (8 pups). Josie's Diva had a beautiful Blenheim litter in February 2020 (our Valentines litter), sired by another beautiful Blenheim champion. Her six beautiful pups have gone to their forever homes.
Those were just the early days, and altogether we have been breeding for nearly 14 years, providing loving, beautiful puppies to more that 100 grateful families in Virginia and as far south and north as Texas and Massachusetts respectively. We raise our pups with love, train them to be affectionate, responsive and responsible family pets, give them early neurologically stimulating exercises for enhanced intelligence, and train them to use potty pans for times when the weather makes those trips outside less than desireable. Finally, we are devoted to our puppy families as mentors for life.
